This 1970 Craigellachie, bottled at 50.60% ABV as a 50 Year Old exclusively for Le Clos, is a rare piece of Speyside history. Craigellachie Distillery, founded in 1891 on the banks of the River Fiddich, is known for a house style that leans meaty and sulphury in youth but transforms with long maturation into something remarkably refined. Fifty years in cask has softened any of that early edge into layers of dried orchard fruit, honey, beeswax, and antique oak. Expect an opening of stewed apple and pear, deepening into notes of walnut, dried apricot, and a faint waxy, almost candle-like richness that connoisseurs prize in old Speyside malts. Spice develops slowly on the palate — clove, nutmeg, and a whisper of ginger — wrapped around a smooth, honeyed sweetness. The finish is long, warm, and complex, closing on soft oak tannins and a lingering note of dried fig. Bottled at cask strength for its age, it retains real vitality rather than the flatness that can affect over-matured whisky. This is a bottle for serious collectors and connoisseurs rather than casual drinking: a single dram deserves an unhurried evening, a proper Glencairn glass, and perhaps the company of others who will appreciate just how rare fifty-year-old Speyside whisky like this has become.
