Akashi White Oak Single Malt 50CL

Akashi White Oak Single Malt comes from the White Oak Distillery in Akashi, Hyogo Prefecture, one of Japan's oldest whisky-producing sites, with distilling roots stretching back to the early 20th century. Unlike the giant Suntory and Nikka operations, White Oak is a small, traditional distillery, and its single malt reflects that hand-crafted, lower-volume approach rather than a house style built for mass consistency. Expect a lighter-bodied Japanese single malt with a clean, delicate profile: on the nose, gentle malt sweetness sits alongside soft orchard fruit — apple and pear — with a faint mineral, almost coastal freshness that many attribute to the distillery's proximity to the Seto Inland Sea. The palate continues in a similarly restrained register, with honey, cereal notes, and a light oaky vanilla, finishing relatively short but clean, without harsh or overly sweet notes. This makes it an approachable style of Japanese whisky, closer to a Highland-style single malt than to the heavier, sherried expressions some drinkers expect from Japan's larger producers. It is well suited to being served neat or with a small splash of water to open the aromatics, and it also performs well in a highball, a classic Japanese serve that suits its lighter character. For whisky drinkers curious about Japan's smaller, more artisanal distilleries, it is a genuinely interesting bottle.
